Nitrous Oxide Sedation
In our office, we typically offer nitrous oxide for sedation. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. Sometimes called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is non-invasive and very safe. Although it will not put you to "sleep," it will make you feel calm and comfortable.
With nitrous oxide, you just breathe normally through a small mask, and within a few short minutes you should start to feel the calming effect. You can typically still hear the directions of the doctor, and although you may feel light-headed or a tingling or heaviness in your arms and legs, most people describe nitrous oxide as very pleasant. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed. You will likely not remember the treatment. Unlike general sedation, you can typically drive yourself home after nitrous oxide sedation. IV (General) sedation |
